A Promise

Words and Music by Judith Hanlon, @1999

The sages and wise ones say life is ephemeral

That things come and go and that's just how it is

They tell us that love rarely goes on forever

The future won't find us just as this day is.

Death makes its visit as sure as the sunrise

Doors always close on some work and some friends.

Triumphs and heartaches are life's strange bedfellows

Chapters start fresh, but they always must end.

But, a promise, a promise

Oh, what's in a promise

It weaves through all changes intent on its goal

A promise, a promise

What is in a promise

A vow is a fire to warm human souls

Let us sing life's song in full orchestration

Harmonies simply can't be played alone

With doubles and couplets and joined single voices

A duet is formed, and a Covenant born.

Someday when joy's light does not grace the morning

The grayness of platitudes invade the day.

Let's promise to then sign the song that we now sing

And seek not to part but find how to stay.

A promise, a promise

Oh, what's in a promise....

A vow is a fire to warm human souls

A promise, a promise

what is in a promise....

So mundane, such ecstasy

So earthbound such spirit

A prison that sets you free

The substance of future

So human, so holy

And the faith to believe
