Every Sunday morning I sit before the cross
Say my Hallelujahs and Amens
I repeat the prayers responsively and clear
And shout with gusto all the hymns
But when the hymnals are shut and put away
The Bible is closed and still
I want to know if Jesus is alive
My aching heart to fill
Dont tell me the old, old story once again
Show me Gods love come alive
Help me find a way to know that Jesus came
Point me to the Spirits light that shines
Its grace that bridges chasms that divide.
Dont show me religion,
theres lots of them around
Theres system to society
In liturgy and order dont stifle
growth and change
And lift up human piety
Show me something growing an
all transforming power
That Jesus changes how you live your day
I want to know that Jesus is alive
Can you show me where hes been today
Dont tell me youve opened
your arms as Jesus did
Then preach a message that divides.
Ill know you believe theres room
at Calvarys cross
When rivers of its grace stream far and wide.
When our pews are filled with diversity
With joy we seek to welcome and embrace
I want to know what would Jesus do
For those excluded from His Tables grace.
Open doors that each might find their place.
